The graph illustrates the number of overseas students from four different countries (Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore) who arrived in Australia for education between 1982 and 2000. The data is represented in thousands.
In 1982, the number of students from all four countries was relatively low, with Indonesia having slightly above 10,000 students. Over the next decade, there was a significant increase in Indonesian students reaching approximately 35,000 by 1998 before experiencing a slight decline. Students from Hong Kong showed a steady increase throughout the period to reach just below 20,000.
Malaysian student numbers remained stable until around 1994 when there was a sharp rise to over 20,000 by the year 2000. Singapore had the lowest student representation but showed gradual growth over the years.
The graph clearly shows the trends in the number of overseas students from four different countries of residence in Australia over an 18-year period, with Indonesia being the most prominent source of students.
